Changing my name

Posted by: x10 In: Life

I’ve been thinking a bit lately about my blog’s name.  “That’s what she said” seemed funny when I started about two years ago, but the humour in the name is entirely lost on anyone who doesn’t follow (and love) The Office.

It’s awkward because

  1. For one, it’s really hard to communicate in text the emphasis you need on the word “she”.
  2. Given the sexual connotation of the quote, it doesn’t help my cause of being (1) a woman, (2) a blonde and (3) wanting to be taken seriously.

That said, I don’t want to be a prude. I value the free, raw and unedited nature of the web.  The web is true democracy – it gives everyone their voice.  It flies in the face of formal edits, re-writes and the stodgy “company speak” that awkwardly spews off company websites and brochures (who talks like that anyway?).

I’ve been thinking about my voice and how I write about what I’m passionate about.  It’s taken a while to get into the groove of writing what I really think and not apologizing for my own opinions. I can’t tell you how many posts are still sitting as drafts!  It’s also taken a while for me to see that it’s OK to write articles, even if  everyone around me doesn’t agree with my opinion.

Of course, I can’t be so brash as to say I’m always right – far from it!  But at least I can say everything is up for discussion and nothing is off limits when it’s mine and its here in my blog.

I need a blog name that’s really me.  I’ve got to stop hiding behind the word “she”.  Something really x10.

I’ll keep you posted…

no pun intended.

First that’s not just a joke from the Office, my Dad was using that back when I was a kid! Second, don’t worry about writing controversial or opinionated stuff, that is what gets the most traffic and comments! You should sensor yourself, always remember that you may piss of some one who may be signing your cheque next week!

Hmm…something really “you” eh?

I dunno. I’ll think about it.

I think that I understand what you mean about blogging regularly and feeling like you do really “know what you’re talking about” or worrying when others challenge your knowledge with their own stuff and getting into matches over silliness.

I have a professional blog that wasn’t well read and then people started to check it out and from time to time, you get people who post and say they disagree with something I’ve said. I’ve basically established a ground rule for myself. It’s “blog when you want to and have something useful to say.”

I find it’s helpful for me to get out stuff that I might have been reluctant to say, but was useful. You never know how many people will bump into something and NEVER, EVER comment.

I still don’t have a name for you..yet.

Hmmm… the more people I’ve told that I’m changing the “That’s what she said” the more people tell me they like it. I’d like to find something equally witty without the connotation.

Bill – Good points there – have you ever pissed someone off with your blog?

Ron – thanks for the advice. I think that blogging has helped me me hash out my own ideas/opinions that I’ve been reluctant to say to others – it’s even made me challenge my own point of view cause when I’ve tried to write it out. I’m still waiting for my first nasty comment. Fingers crossed!

Hey X10, I would hate to see the name change but understand your concerns. Having known you professionally and personally for years, I think that within minutes of talking to you people will see that you know what you’re talking about but also have a sense of humour. Keep the name ;)

My 2 cents.

I noticed that you said you *think* Chris just convinced you. So, for what it’s worth I’ll try and encourage you firmly into the “keep it” camp and say that I think you should keep it too. It’s a catchy name that draws people in and once you’ve got their attention, there’s no reason you can’t redefine the connotation for them. I think you’re up to the challenge of making you represent the words, not the other way around.

Ironically, I just read this today:
“The meaning of a word is the sum of the contexts in which it occurs. When we hear a word, we hear with it an echo of all the situations in which we have heard it before.” – Paul McHenry Roberts (1917-1967)

Agree ment with the other comments that it is not a joke just from the Office.

HOWEVER, don’t change the name. I think the readers that you are looking to attract will very well know where the emphasis is. Don’t “dumb down” the name.
